Sage was truly alien to Sam. To a man as open as he, to find someone as closed, guarded and secretive as her was both eye-opening and curious in equal measure. He wasn't the sort to delve into that side of the world, it wasn't in his nature to deal in shadows and deception. Even when trying to keep a low profile to avoid Weapon X, he had chosen a route that kept him in the public eye. Sam Guthrie needed people around him. The life of a loner, seemingly the path chosen by is guide, was not for him.
It didn't seem to be for the guy who was to play ferry-man either. Sage and he were engaged in lengthy discussions out of earshot and after the initial glee at being passed a substantial amount of cash, the man's face dropped before running through shock and finally ending up at fear. Tessa was not the sort to mince her words and whatever she had said had put the frighteners on the guy. He looked completely terrified.
It was a look that was finding it hard to shake itself free of his face as he began to prepare the small boat for departure. A simple affair, the boat was quick enough to get them across to Eire and would do for the crossing. Besides, the smaller things were, the harder it would be for Weapon X to pick them up and right now that worked out just fine for Sam.
There wasn't exactly much room to sit, so Sam made himself as comfortable as possible on one of the benches that lined the side of the boat. It had all happened so quickly that he had no bags, no chance of clothes, no nothing. There was still the initial trepidation about whether or not he was doing the right thing, if Sage could be trusted.
Was someone else there? A slight movement caught his eye underneath the canopy. Female - too curvy to be a man. Hidden under a hood that cast shadows all across her face. Sam chuckled to himself. Shadows had been a big theme of the evening, figured that they would carry on through into the early hours of the morning. Of course, Mystery Woman might have been there to kill him as much as make the journey across with him but it didn't stop Sam pushing up to his feet and crossing the short distance between the two.
"Hi," He opened with a warm smile. "Ah'm Sam. Looks like we're gonna be makin' this trip together huh?"

Rogue hadn't been out in the open for this long ever since the night she'd managed to escape Weapon X. Her life had turned into a surreal nightmare of epic proportions, loaded with paranoia and half-remembered night terrors that woke her screaming in a cold sweat. She'd nearly worked herself into further insanity by the time Sage had found her.
Marie was, understandably, suspicious of the cold woman who spoke with such a lack of emotion. However, she had no other options and if Sage was an emissary of Weapon X then so be it. At least she wouldn't be dangling in limbo forever, constantly looking over her shoulder and eyeing every stranger on the street like they were out to get her.
And if Sage turned out to be telling the truth...
Well, that was more than Rogue dared to dream of.
Movement across the small boat caught her attention and she glanced up at a frame that was somehow familiar. He was tall, not too heavily built like others she knew but bulky nonetheless. In the darkness she wasn't totally sure of what he looked like.
And he seemed to notice her, too. Much more open than she was, he immediately rose to his feet and crossed the small craft to talk to her.
"Hi," He opened with a warm smile. "Ah'm Sam. Looks like we're gonna be makin' this trip together huh?"
The voice was familiar as well, though Rogue couldn't place it. He seemed so... friendly. So normal. He was so unassuming, and the fear and caution that dominated the minds of herself and Sage didn't seem to exist for him.
"Ah'm Rogue," she said quietly, pushing her hood back to give the stranger a guarded look.

((Sorry it's short. Still recovering!))
Sam recognised her as soon as Rogue's face came into view. Everyone in the mansion had known about Rogue and her hair, which was right up there with Rogue and her attitude. Quiet, distant, moody and forceful were just some of the words that had been used to describe the young woman during the time Sam new her. A far cry from the person trying to make themselves as small as possible on the boat.
"Ah'm Rogue,"
"Ah know!"
Sam's face lit up, pleased to see someone familiar after so many years. The thought she might just be a plant to convince him to get on the boat willingly, or worse - to kill him had yet to cross his mind. He was just relieved to see her. Problem was, she didn't seem to recognise him.
"It's me...Sam...Sam Guthrie! Ah used t'be called Cannonball, back at Xavier's."
Rogue had been one of the few at the school that Sam had persevered with, albeit in the brief time their paths had crossed. Having found a fellow Southerner, Sam had naturally gravitated towards someone who would maybe understand some of what he had been brought up with. What had further advanced his cause was the conversation-starting nature of his mutation. Especially with regard to Rogue.
"Remember? Ah'm the guy with the shield...That kinda lets ya touch me."

He recognised her. She could see it, clear as day, on his face. Marie flinched, drawing away from the open, friendly face that hovered in front of her, wishing suddenly that the darkness that didn't quite close around them would swallow her whole.
Or that the darkness inside would come and take over.
"Ah know!"
She flinched again, drawing away from him before the meaning of his words sunk in. She shook her head abruptly, staring up at him rather incredulously as he continued to talk, to apparently try and make her understand.
why're y'still talkin'?
"It's me...Sam...Sam Guthrie! Ah used t'be called Cannonball, back at Xavier's."
Sam Guthrie.
Marie's eyes squeezed closed and she pressed the heels of her hands into them, trying at once to remember and not to remember. She didn't want to remember Xavier's. Xavier's was destroyed, she'd watched it fall and it was a safe time that didnt' exist anymore.
Sam Guthrie, however wouldn't hear of her being allowed to forget. She'd been forgetting for long enough, being weak and following along for fear of ...
fear of what?
She'd leave that question for later, because his voice drew her hands away from her eyes.
"Remember? Ah'm the guy with the shield...That kinda lets ya touch me."
"Ah r'member," she nodded slowly, watching him as recognition dawned on her face, bright as the rising sun. Sam Guthrie. She remembered being able to rough-house with him, being able to laugh and joke and know what the other meant with their traditional Southern upbrigings.
"Ah r'member ya," she said quietly, leaning forward slightly, torn between wanting to hug him until his head popped off and staying back. Could never be too safe.
"Y'... y'been safe, Sam?"

"Y'... y'been safe, Sam?"
"Kinda. Well, safe as Ah can be, Ah guess."
To say it was strange to see Rogue like this was an understatement. Gone was the fire and brimstone and in it's place was left a meek kitten. A far cry from the rough and tumble pup that had spent hour after hour slamming him through holographic Danger Room walls. Or, as Sam recalled it, being slammed through walls by a dynamic young gent.
"Ah mean...Ah'm alive. An' you are too. Look like y'all took a different route t'get here than Ah did though."
The clothing, the mannerisms and the hesitant look in her eye spoke volumes. Sam was still new to the concept of Weapon X and although Sage's briefing had been short and to the point, it had given him enough pointers to know when to put two and two together. He wasn't going to ask the girl outright, nor was he even going to imply it, figuring that was the last thing she wanted. He would simply treat her normally, something that was apparently alien to those in charge of the Program.
So he chatted.
"Ah've been hidin'. In London. Figured if Ah'm out of sight they ain't gonna be comin' after me or my own. Means Momma, Josh, Jeb, Pai, the twins an' the others are all ok, y'know?"
He chuckled. "Thought Ah was pretty good at it too. That was until Robo-woman done hauled me on out an' dumped me in some boat!"
Still, he kept himself to himself, away from a woman he knew was protective of her personal space. Sam sat close enough to be heard over the engines, but far enough away so as not to crowd her. He leaned forward, resting his forearms on his thighs and interlocking his fingers.
"You...er...Y'still got the strength? An' flight?" And the silent question: The voices? For all the time they spent together, Sam's natural desire to help people was constantly frustrated with his inability to do anything for his friend. All he could do then, and possibly now was just sit back, watch and offer a shoulder to cry on when needed. "Ah still fly in a straight line. Never got the hang of corners. Then again, walls never really got the hang o'me."
